Youth Tobacco Prevention

GCSAPP recently combined efforts with the Gunnison County Tobacco Education and Prevention Coalition.

Vision Statement

We envision a Gunnison County unaffected by the negative health effects of tobacco, where use of tobacco is not considered socially desirable by any group, where use of tobacco in public is not common in general and specifically not outside of schools, where a policy restricting youth access and possession of tobacco has been enacted and tobacco free campuses at our hospital and college serve as positive examples of health-promoting policy.

The GCSAPP Tobacco Prevention Steering Committee has collected data on youth access and works to promote efforts to reduce access to tobacco products by youth.  They recently held a lunch for tobacco retailers to educate and engage businesses in the community about ways to limit access to tobacco products by youth.  See our factsheet for more information on access to tobacco by youth and our policy recommendations.

Last year we helped start a youth advocacy group based at Gunnison Middle School, The group’s focus is to empower young people to make healthy choices and to say no to tobacco, alcohol and drugs. The youth also receive leadership and advocacy training.
