You really do hold a great deal of power to reduce the odds that your kids will begin to use drugs or alcohol. GCSAPP works to equip parents with the tools they need to raise drug-free kids. With the help of our coalition as well as the school district, we hold informational events and programming to assist parents in addressing specific parent/child drug-related topics. Using local media sources, we work to maintain a consistent message for parents and community members on these issues.

Kids who learn about drug risks from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use.

Parents of Gunnison County students were surveyed in 2010 about substance use. Here are some key findings:

  • 97.7% of parents report having talked to their 6-12 grader about drugs and alcohol. Congratulations parents!!!
  • But, most parents don't think THEIR kids are using. Only 10.5%% of parents of children grades 6-12 believed their children used alcohol. In actuality 28% of all students reported having used alcohol in the last 30 days (2010 HKCS).
  • 43.4% of parents agreed that alcohol use by 9-12 graders is a big problem in the community.
  • 76.7% agree or strongly agree that our community needs to be more aware and involved in addressing the issues of alcohol and drug abuse.
